The Municipality of Hastings Highlands is reminding drivers to be mindful of turtles crossing the road.

The Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre has declared a state of emergency in Ontario after nearly 800 turtles have been hit by motor vehicles between May and September.

Kelly Wallace from conservation centre says the Ministry of Natural Resources is trying to keep turtles off the road.

Wallace also says the spike in road-related turtle injuries could be from the wet spring.

The conservation centre is located in Peterborough and is having an open house on September 30th.
