Ontario Parks unveiling changes as busy season starts

With the school year coming to an end this week, Ontario Parks is getting ready for its busiest time of the year. The organization says many campgrounds across the province are already booked full, but there are still camping opportunities available.

It says, to make it easier for more campers to secure spots, it’s reduced the maximum length of stay at some parks to 7 days, from 14. The new rule applies to Algonquin and Bon Echo parks.

Ontario Parks has also expanded its Daily Vehicle Permit service to more parks this year. Day use permits can now be booked up to five days in advance at 57 Ontario parks, so visitors are guaranteed a spot. Algonquin Park is among these parks.

Total fire ban remains in Algonquin Park

If you’re heading to Algonquin Park for the holiday weekend keep in mind that a total fire ban remains in place there. Visitors have limitations on what they can use.

Campfires and charcoal or wood-burning barbecues are not allowed. Tiki torches, candles and outdoor wood-burning stoves are also a ‘no.’

However, portable gas, propane or naphtha stoves or barbecues with a shut-off control valve are allowed.

The park is in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s Restricted Fire Zone. More information on what can and can’t be used now is on the Ontario Parks website.
