Madawaska Valley Fire Department has said they have responded to more chimney fires in the past month than they have in the past year.

Chief Corwin Quade says that they have responded to 5 Chimney fires in the month of January, compared to just 3 for all of 2020. The Department is urging residents with wood burners to clean their chimneys once a month. They say a chimney fire can spread easily and quickly leave your home in flames.

Chief Quade says that weather and burning freshly cut wood are contributors to the high number of fires this year.
