Speeding and hazardous driving were among the most laid charges over the weekend.
Over the Easter long weekend, the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP conducted their seat belt campaign and charged 5 motorists for not buckling up.
Constable Shawn Peever says that on top of that 48 speeding charges were laid, 4 stunt driving charges and 8 hazardous moving violations were handed out.
Peever says that stunt driving, in most cases refers to motorists getting caught going at least 50 km/h over the speed limit. He adds that it can also include performing donuts, drifting, popping wheelies, and driving with someone in the trunk. He says a stunt driver that is stopped roadside will get a 7-day driver’s suspension, a towed and impounded car for 7 days and could be fined anywhere from $2000 to $10000.
In terms of hazardous moving violations, he says that it’s a general term used to describe dangerous driving behaviours such as following too closely, changing lanes in a dangerous way and careless driving.
He adds that in an effort to reduce motor vehicle collisions, they also conducted enforcement and education activities associated with negative driving behaviours.
