Be part of something that’s more than a rewarding experience.

That is the message from the Madawaska Valley Hospice Palliative Care who are looking for volunteers to assist families struggling with lifelong conditions.

Lisa Hubers, executive director of the hospice, says that volunteers would be trained over 4 days and would gain a lot of knowledge on being a caretaker. They would learn about what families go through (grief and bereavement) as well as the types of symptoms that come with certain illnesses. Hands on experience would also be taught such as methods on how to move someone with reduced mobility and simple care things like gentle hand massages.

Hubers mentions that volunteers shouldn’t be afraid to sign up as the time commitment is very small. She says that the minimum requirements for volunteering are at least twice a month for 2-4 hours. Flexibility is available and snowbirds and cottagers are welcomed. No previous healthcare knowledge is required and arrangements can be made should you miss a training session. During the training sessions, the hospice would supply your meals.
