John Street closure delayed as County finds alternatives for construction

Highway 62 in Barry’s Bay may not be closed in June after all.

In a letter shared at the most recent Madawaska Valley Council meeting, the County says they have found potential alternatives to a full replacement of the Etmanski Swamp culvert. Initially, the County would have closed off John Street between the Legion and the High School in order to replace the culvert, with a detour going through Lakeshore Drive.

However, Taylor Hanrath, Acting Manager of Infrastructure Renfrew County, says they are currently in talks with Fisheries and Oceans Canada to approve a box liner technology which would not require the road to be closed. They expect the plan to be approved or denied in a month’s time.

Should the technology not be approved, the County will move forward with the road closure. The County has said that if John Street closes, it will detour traffic through Old Barry’s Bay Road when possible. They would also widen curves along Lakeshore Drive for transport trucks and cover the cost of repairs to the road should they occur.

Regardless of what the County chooses, it is possible that any construction work on the culvert will not start until 2023.
