OPP: If it sounds too good to be true, it’s probably a scam

Regardless of your age, gender, or location, you can take basic steps to protect yourself from fraud.

That’s according to Killaloe OPP Constable Catherine Yarmel, which comes as March is being recognized as Fraud Prevention Month. Yarmel says the Killaloe OPP detachment continues to get a steady stream of calls from residents reporting scams. Because of that, she says it’s important to take the right steps to make sure you don’t become a victim.

She says the easiest thing to do is to just hang up on callers asking for your personal information. Yarmel also says you need to be careful if a charity you’ve never heard of contacts you.

Yarmel says, because all registered charities are overseen by the Canada Revenue Agency, you can use its website to look them up.

Yarmel says fraudsters are always looking for new ways to steal your money, so if it sounds too good to be true, you’re probably being scammed.
