The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has released a plan to address key factors driving climate change.

The five-year plan, called ‘Naturally Resilient: MNRF’s Natural Resource Climate Adaptation Strategy’, includes actions to maintain, enhance, and restore biodiversity and ecosystems in Ontario. Senior Media Relations Officer Jolanta Kowalski says the steps included in the plan are specific to each area in the province, based on what’s driving climate change.

Kowalski says the strategy includes a number of goals, like increasing motivation and awareness about climate change. She says, at a local level, climate change could increase the number of species that could survive in the Bancroft area, but also displace some native ones.

Kowalski says climate change can also cause natural disasters, like forest fires, floods, and winter storms, to become worse. Although it’s hard to know how natural disasters will impact the Bancroft area, she says the MNRF’s strategy will help effectively manage and respond to them now and in the future.
