Firefighters from Madawaska Valley prevented a blaze from spreading to other homes from a garage fire on Paugh Lake Road on Friday.

Fire Chief Corwin Quade says 16 fire fighters in total responded to the scene, which had already engulfed a garage, destroying the car within.

The fire department says aside from the owner who was taken to hospital with second-degree burns, no one else was hurt.

Quade says the investigation shows the fire was accidental, with no foul play suspected.

It took two hours for crews to put out the blaze, stopping it from spreading to another home less than eight feet away.

Quade says this incident again goes to show how important it is to have an effective home-escape plan in the event of a fire.
