Police reminding residents e-scooter use is subject to bylaws and regulations

With students back to the books, Renfrew OPP officers are noticing an increase in electric scooter use by youth going to and from school.

Provincial police are reminding residents e-scooter use is subject to municipal bylaws and provincial regulations, and that they are not permitted in all communities.

Police say there are no municipalities in the Renfrew/Arnprior jurisdiction participating in the provincial e-scooter pilot program, meaning e-scooters are not permitted for use on public roads, streets, or sidewalks within those municipalities.

Where e-scooters are permitted through municipal bylaw, riders must comply with requirements that include being at least 16-years of age, wearing a helmet if under age 18, staying off sidewalks and obeying rules of the road.

Passengers and cargo are not permitted on e-scooters.
