Police say their was an exchange of gunfire during the observance of Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.

Belleville Dep. Chief Sheri Meeks said on Monday afternoon that Const. Jeff Smith sustained serious injuries.

“He is a longstanding and highly respected member of our emergency response unit, known by his colleagues as a dedicated officer, trusted teammate and committed public servant,” Dep. Chief Meeks said.

Smith is recovering in an intensive care unit.

“While he continues to face a significant road to recovery, his condition has stabilized and we remain hopeful and encouraged by his progress.”

Dep. Chief Meeks said she wanted to acknowledge the significant impact the incident has had on the Belleville Jewish community.

“We recognize the concern and uncertainty many may be feeling, particularly given that this occurred near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue, during one of the holiest days in the Jewish faith.

“Let me be very clear. Hate and violence have no place in our community. Every person deserves to feel safe when attending a place of worship, gathering with loved ones or participating in community life.”

The County of Hastings said Monday it is deeply saddened by the tragic incident and their thoughts are with the injured Belleville Police Service officer, congregants of the Sons of Jacob Synagogue, their families, and everyone affected.

Founded in 1905, Sons of Jacob has been the spiritual home of Jewish life in Belleville and the Quinte region for over a century, according to its website.

Increased patrols and a heightened police presence are in place throughout the city including around places of worship and police are continuing to work closely with community leaders to provide reassurance and support, the deputy chief said.

Dep. Chief Meeks added that the incident is also a reminder of the realities of policing and that the men and women who wear the uniform are not just police officers.

“They are parents, spouses, children, friends and neighbours. Every day they leave their homes and loved ones, not knowing what they may encounter. Yet when danger arises, they step forward to protect others.”

The province’s Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate and is leading the investigation.

The SIU urges anyone with information, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at Special Investigations Unit — I’ve Witnessed an Incident.
