For those watching in Bancroft, the eclipse will start at 2:08 pm today, reaching the maximum at 3:22pm, it will then end at 4:33.
While it is important to protect your eyes (you must have certified eclipse glasses to watch it directly) the eclipse is a great opportunity for kids and grown ups to witness something incredible, according to Dr. Oletha MacIntyre an educator and former astronaut candidate who was raised in Hastings Highlands.
“I’ve heard so many stories of people, as kids, having to go into the school basement, so they couldn’t look out window” said Dr. Macintyre, “That’s one of the things that the entire eclipse committee and educators across the area are working really hard to alleviate, that fear. You can’t look directly at the sun, but you can totally enjoy this eclipse and it’s OK to be outside. It’s an amazing experience for children to have.”
Dr MacIintyre also shared some great viewing options if you can make it outside to watch this eclipse. She explained you can make an eclipse viewer just using household items such as a colander (used for draining spaghetti).
“If you are using a colander or a hole in a piece of paper, what you want to do is have the eclipse happening behind you and you’re letting that light shine through the small hole, projecting onto a nice surface and you will be able to witness it that way.
For those who want to experience the path of totality, its not far away with Belleville being in the path.
