More veterans are getting some public recognition this Remembrance Day season.

There are 19 new banners that honour Canadian Forces veterans with local ties on area street poles this year, bringing the total to 104.

The Barry’s Bay Royal Canadian Legion co-ordinates the banner program. Families approach the legion and pay a fee to get a banner made that documents the service of the veteran.

Legion President Heather Poliquin says she is thrilled that new banners continue to be made each year and she continues to get positive response from the public.

“They love it, especially this year,” she says. “We’re getting a lot of comments because (Madawaska Valley) Township put them up (so they’re visible) as you’re coming into town, from the high school area. They put two banners on each pole.  So, it looks really impressive when you come into town from that side.”

The banners are now up in Barry’s Bay and other nearby communities, including Whitney, which leads the way with 10 new banners this year.
