Although snow isn’t on the ground yet, this is a busy time of year for the Opeongo Snowbirds Snowmobile Club.

Members are beginning to remove debris on the ground, to get trails ready for the upcoming season.

The club maintains about 170 kilometres worth of trails, which cover an area between Whitney and Wilno, and north to Bonnechere.

President Lynn Northey says the club needs more volunteers, particularly mechanics, those who can drive groomers and people who can do administrative work.

She says volunteers become linked with a community of snowmobile enthusiasts, who want to promote the sport and the economic benefits it can bring communities.

“The club members are all passionate about either the community or the sport,” she says. “We range in age from high school students, who come out to get their community service hours, to retirees. In the end, we’re all passionate about this area and the sport and the trail system that we bring visitors to every year.”
