Genealogy group creates legacy with healthcare donation

A local genealogy group has found a way to honour its own legacy.

The Barry’s Bay Heritage Society Genealogy Group once helped people trace their family trees.

The group has now dissolved but past members completed one last task. They donated $2,256.30 to St. Francis Valley Healthcare Foundation.

Original member Theresa Prince says the group started in 2002 and eventually formed its own executive and had monthly meetings. However, it lost momentum when meetings stopped for the pandemic and never started up again.

Prince says those still close to the group decided the money it had in the bank from its membership fees should be donated to a good cause.

“It’s very sad that we will not be meeting anymore,” Prince says. “But I’m happy with the accomplishments we made and the people we were able to reach out to help find their roots.”

Prince says she and a few others with the group still have a passion for genealogy and will assist Barry’s Bay families with research if they request it.
