Half of Homes Checked by Fire Department in First Week Fail Inspections

Madawaska Valley Fire Chief Corbin Quade says more than half of homes inspected for smoke and C-O detectors hadn’t passed.

Quade says only 24 homes have been inspected so far but it’s a dangerous sign residents may not be taking fire safety seriously.

He says even though more than a dozen homes failed to comply with code, no fines were handed out.

Instead, new smoke and carbon monoxide detectors were handed out at cost.

Quade says his primary goal is to keep residents informed and make public safety a top priority.

He says fines won’t help to make residents more conscious of fire safety, but education will.

Residents can contact the township at (613) 756-2747, ext. 223 to schedule a home inspection over the coming weeks.
