Community art competition for all ages set for Saturday at Barnet Park

A community art competition that celebrates the natural beauty of Calabogie and the talent of local artists is returning for a second year.

The Greater Madawaska Landscape Artist of the Year event is open to all ages and abilities in a friendly outdoor painting contest on Saturday at Barnet Park.

Organizers including the Greater Madawaska Recreation and Culture Committee and local artists say it’s a way to connect with nature, the arts, and the local community. There are categories for primary (up to Grade 3), Grades 4-8, high school and adults aged 18 and above.

Coordinator Colin Sutherland told MyBarrysBayNow that the only rule is artists must create a landscape.

“We have so much talent and so many different skill levels and techniques.”

Sutherland said community members asked for more art events in the township and the competition turned out to be a perfect fit.

“Last year we had all kinds of artists including folks working with wool, watercolours and our first place winner even used recycled styrofoam. We had over 25 artists participate and even more spectators.”

Sutherland anticipates some growth after the success of the inaugural event.

“I anticipate the event to be a bit bigger, while still retaining the charm of a small-scale art competition. This is a great event for amateur artists to test their skills and to share their talent all in the great outdoors,” he said.

Judges and local artists Marlene Schaley and Kathy Haycock will provide “thoughtful feedback to budding artists.”

Artists are asked to bring their own gear and to pack a lunch. Guests are welcome to watch the artists.

Check-in starts at 8 a.m.. The painting session runs from 9:15 a.m. until 2 p.m. Public judging runs for one hour starting at 2 p.m. followed by an awards ceremony at 3 p.m.

Registration is free and open to all.
