Keep the wheels turning: Drivers needed for Canadian Cancer Society program

It’s a sad reality that some cancer patients don’t have a driver to get them to regional cancer centres.

A program administered through the Canadian Cancer Society called Wheels of Hope is helping to find transportation.

“We want to make sure that anyone going through cancer has a ride but we need volunteers to keep the wheels turning, so to speak,” said volunteer recruiter Mark Kahan.

Kahan says the program is in need of volunteer drivers throughout the province and country, including in Barry’s Bay.

“It’s hard to get the word out to smaller communities but there are people that are living with cancer in these smaller communities and if we have a volunteer driver, we can make sure we get them to their appointments.”

Kahan said the positions are flexible and just two or three weekdays per month can make a big impact in what can be the most difficult part of someone’s life. Retirees or anyone with spare time on their hands are encouraged to try it out.

Kahan started as a volunteer driver and was humbled by how grateful people are for the support.

Great conversations and friendships are part of the payoff, he adds.

Tax receipts or compensation for mileage are available.
