50th Bonnechere Cup this weekend in Eganville

The 50th Bonnechere Cup snowmobile races are happening this weekend in Eganville.

Race director Scott Clark said the annual tradition started in 1974, but they missed a couple of years during the pandemic.

He said as time goes on, the races get faster and faster, with more high-tech snowmobiles.

“I used to race myself back in the 90s and early 2000s and I see that we’re gaining in fans and sponsorship and support and volunteers and it’s much appreciated from everybody, and it’s going really good,” he said.

Clark said they have a busy weekend planned, with snowmobiles ranging from vintage-class, outlaw-class, and the champ class, under which drivers will vie for the ultimate Bonnechere Cup.

He said competitors come from all over Canada and the United States for the event.

There is a $50,000 total purse split between all classes.

The racing takes place both Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
