MV fire department shares holiday safety tips

The Madawaska Valley Fire Department is sharing tips on how to make the holiday season more fire-safe.

They advise using outdoor-rated LED lights and hanging them up with nail-free clips, as well as disposing of damaged strings which could cause an electrical fire.

For anyone using a real tree, they advise watering it daily to avoid it drying out and becoming a fire hazard.

Trees should also be kept away from heat sources and non-LED lights.

Candles pose a fire hazard, and the fire department advises using battery-powered candles for decorations.

Real candles should always be blown out when you leave the room, and kept away from pets and children.

They say most fatal fires occur during the holidays, and having working smoke alarms gives extra time to get to safety in the event of a fire.

The department advises having a smoke alarm on every floor, testing them monthly and changing the batteries annually.

The Township of Madawaska Valley will continue to share holiday fire safety tips from the fire department on their Facebook page this week.
