Barry’s Bay historic caboose moving to Sharbot Lake

Madawaska Valley’s 1922 Canadian Pacific caboose has been purchased and is scheduled to be relocated.

The township confirmed the Central Frontenac Railway Heritage Society has purchased it, but it has yet to be moved out of Barry’s Bay.

The heritage society’s board chair Derek Redmond said they’re in the process of finding the right company to move the caboose, with the relocation deadline set for October.

They’re also raising funds to support the move and the caboose’s renovation.

He said it’s new home will be the Railway Heritage Park in Sharbot Lake.

“We already have a modern steel caboose from 1976, which is about when the railway era ended in Sharbot Lake. And so we were looking for an old wooden caboose, the one in Barry’s Bay was built in 1922, which will kind of represent the earlier days of railroading in Sharbot Lake,” Redmond said.

He said their fundraising efforts will go towards renovating the caboose and turning it into a museum-like space. It will display some of the society’s artifacts.
