East Region OPP remind residents that lifejackets save lives

With 10 drownings so far in eastern Ontario, OPP are reminding residents that lifejackets save lives and reverse a disturbing trend, but only if you wear them.

Police said capsizing or falling overboard are the two leading causes of death in boating incidents, and wearing a life jacket can mean the difference between life and death.

OPP have responded to ten marine fatalities in the region this summer, more than double the number of drowning deaths at this time last year.

In each incident in the region this summer, the victim was not wearing a life jacket.

Chief Superintendent Lisa Wilhelm, OPP East Region Commander,  said education and changing the mindset ensures everyone wears the proper gear, whether in a power boat or in a canoe.

Wilhelm said it’s about getting home safely and ensuring that everyone, adults and children, are safe on or near the water.
