Highway 60 construction to start this week

Traffic will soon slow on Hwy. 60, as Madawaska Valley works to improve the main road through town, also known as the Opeongo Line.

Traffic control measures will be in place on Wednesday, Sept. 20 and Thursday, Sept. 21, as the township begins replacing manhole lids in the area between Mintha Street and Arena Road.

Madawaska Valley Operations Manager Hilary Kutchkoskie asks drivers to be patient while construction is on, as the work is needed.

“It’s very important. Manhole lids are undermining and their structural integrity has been compromised,” he says. “We need a long-term fix. It’s a high-impact road and there’s a lot of traffic on the road.”

Kutchkoskie says next phase of the project is expected to start in the second week of October. It will involve the pouring of concrete to build new crosswalks.

Madawaska Valley received a Connecting Links grant to do the project, meaning most of the roughly $360,000 cost comes from provincial tax dollars.
