Transport Canada wants boaters’ feedback on engine cut-offs

The federal government wants boaters to weigh in on a new safety requirement that’s meant to save lives on lakes.

Transport Canada is gathering feedback on a proposed new regulation to add engine cut-off switches on recreational vessels.

An engine cut-off switch is a device that stops the propeller when the operator is unexpectedly ejected from a boat.

Currently, Canada only requires engine cut-off switches be installed on personal watercraft, but many manufacturers have been installing the switches on larger vessels for years due to their safety benefits. They’ve been mandated on large boats in the United States since 2019.

More information on the proposal – and survey to fill out – can be found here.
