Renfrew County SPCA sharing tips for back to school

Your furry friend may be anxious as back-to-school season starts.

That’s according to the SPCA in Renfrew County, saying there may be days when your furry friend is home alone. Amanda Eckersley, Manager of the branch, says a sudden change in schedule can be a big adjustment for your pet.

However, Eckersley adds there are ways to help your pets cope with anxiety with the change of schedule, like spending quality time with your pets when you get home from school. Other tips include enrolling them in doggy daycare or dog walking service or asking for friends the pet knows to check in on them. Playing soft music designed for your pets is also suggested, and consider a pet cam.

Treats also play a role in taking down a pet’s anxiety. Hide high-value treats around the animal’s area to keep them distracted while you leave. Reward them for going to a specific place before you leave, as this helps build a routine. Starting this routine in advance will help keep your pet happy as you head back to school.
