Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is urging people to keep their pets safe as the heat increases over the weekend.

They are saying to not leave your pet alone in a vehicle, no matter where the car is parked. Even in the shade and with the windows down, cars can still reach deadly temperatures even on mild days. They say this problem has been an ongoing one in Ontario. SPCA say it is best to just leave pets at home.

They also say to make sure your pet as access to fresh water and a cool sheltered place out of direct sunlight. They should only be left outdoors for short periods of time to avoid heat stroke. They say to use caution when playing with your pet, as overexerting them could also lead to heat exhaustion. If you are walking your pet, SPCA says to walk them in the early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler.

SPCA also reminds dog owners that some dogs are more susceptible to heat than others. Northern dogs like huskies can overheat easier than their warmer-climate counterparts. Short-muzzled dogs like pugs can also have a difficult time in the heart. Older, overweight pets or pets with medical conditions also are at a higher risk.

SPCA is asking the public to post about pet safety on social media. They say if you see an animal suffering in heat, call 1-833-926-4625, or call local police.
