That donation may be going in the hands of the wrong person.

The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP are warning residents about a door-to-door scam involving a person selling chocolate bars on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). They say an incident was reported on May 3rd, 2019. An adult female suspect with an ID badge was going door-to-door pretending to be with CCS.

They say that although CCS is currently collecting donations, they are not selling chocolate bars. “CSS canvassers are equipped with an official name tag and receipt books so tax receipts are provided at the time of donation.” the OPP says.

Police say homeowners should ask for a photo ID and get the name of the person and charity the salesperson is working for. The OPP also say to never share any personal information. They add that if you ask a salesperson to leave, they must do so right away. Other advice they give is to match up company names with the salesperson’s business card and contract.

If you or anyone you know has been a victim of this scam, please contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
