Hunters May Get Ticked Off

Hunters beware, you could get ticked off this hunting season.

Although ticks like to hide in cold weather, they tend to come out in warm afternoons. David Tantalo, manager of healthy environments for the Renfrew County and District Health Unit, says that hunters should watch out as ticks will be looking for blood meals. They usually look to bite rodents, but if you walk by a tall piece of grass or bush, a tick could easily latch on to you he says.

As hunting season begins, hunters should especially watch out as they will be hanging around rodents and tall grass. Tantalo offers hunters advice when he mentions that it’s always important to search your clothing after coming from the outdoors. He mentions that putting your outdoor clothes in the dryer for 10 minutes (on heat cycle) is a great way to kill off ticks.

Why are ticks so dangerous? Tantolo says that they can carry diseases such as Lyme disease. He states that symptoms that come with Lyme disease are fever, headache, muscle pain, fatigue and the bull’s eye rash. He says that the bull’s eye rash looks just like, you guessed it, a red bull’s eye which is an obvious sign that one would have the disease. Should you feel any of those symptoms, he advises you to seek medical help.
