National School Bus Safety Week in High Gear

The wheels on the bus keep going round and round.

As National School Bus Safety week is operating in high gear, it’s important that drivers keep their safety habits all year round.

General manager of the Renfrew County Joint Transportation Consortium, Robert White, mentions that this week is meant to instill school bus safety virtues. It gives bus companies the chance to make a statement on the importance of safety issues by visiting schools and running safety programs like school bus evacuation routines.

White says that when driving by a school bus, it’s important to slow down and watch for kids. Children don’t always know that the bus has to come to a complete stop and with all that energy, they are always darting around.

When it comes to the hot topic of having seat belts in buses, White states that they are ready to do whatever the ministry decides, as they have always done.

School bus drivers also need to be highlighted this week. White says that drivers are an important part of a child’s school day as they usually build a more informal rapport with students. They can turn a kids frown upside down and that should be highlighted. Should you see a school bus driver this week, greet him or her to let them know they are doing a great job.
