Whitney Public School to become a community hub

Re-using isn’t only a term used for household items.

The District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board has decided to make an all-in-one community centre with the unused Whitney Public School. The mayor of South Algonquin, Jane Dumas mentions that the centre will include a community kitchen and garden, licensed childcare and an employment resource center.

Mayor Dumas pointed out that they are really catering to the needs of their community, especially with the childcare services. “We have a lot of seasonal workers here that don’t work nine to five, Monday to Friday, and through their responses back to the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board, this daycare is geared to their needs, so early morning start up and late evening finish” the Mayor stated.

Although there is no definitive date on the opening of this community hub, Mayor Dumas says it will be in the new year. There will be a sod turning ceremony on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 on the grounds of the Whitney Public School. Mayor Dumas welcomes everyone to attend and hopes that the families that have taken part into making this project come to fruition drop in as well.
