RCDHU launches yellow ribbon campaign against animal bites

The Renfrew County and District Health Unit is kicking off their annual yellow ribbon campaign to reduce animal bites.

It encourages pet owners to tie a yellow marker, like a ribbon, bow or bandana, to their animal’s collar or leash to remind people to give them space.

The campaign is aimed at reducing the number of animal bites, which can cause injury and potential exposure to rabies.

The health unit says many animal bites are preventable if an animal is given space, which they may need due to age, health issues, nervousness, aggression or training.

Yellow ribbons are available for pickup at the health unit’s Pembroke office, as well as other participating partner locations.

The health unit advises people to check with an owner before approaching, give pets space when they are showing signs of fear or stress, and to always supervise children around animals.
