“Tricky” Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College application still under review: Mayor

Madawaska Valley is still reviewing an application to convert an Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College-owned building into a Religious Educational Facility.

Mayor Mark Willmer says it’s a “tricky” issue, noting some councillors criticized the plan at a meeting last month.

Coun. Shelley Maika said the plan to convert the 156 Lakeshore Drive home would be unfair to taxpayers, since buildings deemed as Religious Educational Facilities don’t have a tax charge, like homes do. Coun. Mary Blank said she felt the College’s plan to also house 16 students in the building would make it too cramped and unsafe.

Willmer says he expects the Planning Department to table a report to council soon, possibly at the next meeting on Sept. 19.

“I’m not sure everyone will be happy [with the outcome of the application] but we have to make a decision,” he says. “My concern right now is the safety, ensuring the kids are safe, and I’m not saying they’re not safe. We have to make sure all the proper procedures and regulations are in place.”

Willmer said, while the application process must be thorough, the municipality realizes the College and its students contribute greatly to the community.

The Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Vice-President of Administration, John Boskill, says the College won’t comment on the matter until a decision is made. He confirmed there are 16 students living in the building currently.
