CRTC Classification, Federal Last-Mile Funding Going to Improving Rural Internet

Many areas in the Madawaska Valley, Whitney and Bonnechere Valley will be eligible for last-mile funding to improve internet services.

This comes after the federal government announced $500-million will be invested into improving rural broadband internet.

Last-mile funding is available to communities that have limited broadband service.

The Eastern Ontario Warden’s Caucus is also looking for federal and provincial funding to improve internet access in rural areas.

This comes after the CRTC made Broadband Internet an essential service.

Chair of the Caucus Peter Emon says it will be asking the federal and provincial government for help to fund a $200-million project to improve high speed internet in the region.

This would cover 99 per cent of Eastern Ontario by building and improving towers and adding coverage.
