Municipal Elections Act Changes Could Change How we Vote

Council in the Madawaska Valley is preparing for upcoming changes to the Municipal Elections Act.

Changes could include ranked voting, meaning if multiple candidates are on a ranked ballot residents would choose check their first, second and third choice for office.

CAO Craig Kelley was quick to point out the complications of counting ranked ballots and the costs associated with it.

It would also change the window for campaigning, shortening it significantly with registration for candidates at the beginning of June.

However, any changes implemented would require a resolution from council before it could move forward.
