This summer the Paudash Lake Conservation Association took part in a light pollution study on the lake.
The study was sponsored by U Links, an organization that facilitates community-based research by connecting local organizations with academic institutions.
Two students from Trent University performed the research.
Three properties on the lake were used to test various lighting types to look at the effects on insect attraction.
The testing at each site occurred five times, for two hours, with the University students setting up the lighting equipment and randomly testing different lighting types and assessing the insect attraction levels.
The purpose of the project was to assess how light pollution affects biodiversity as well as aquatic and wildlife.
It also assessed “the perceptions and attitudes of local cottagers and nearby residents towards outdoor lighting on and around Paudash Lake.”
The project aims to address themes such as ecosystem conservation, dark sky preservation, community engagement, policy recommendations, education, outreach and enhancing the overall quality of life of residents.
The project is hosted by the Paudash Lake Conservation Association, which serves as an advocacy organization to protect the interests of those living on and near Paudash Lake.
Study findings will be published in Spring, 2025.
