Think Turtle Initiative launches turtle hatchling blues-themed ‘Name-a-Thon’

What do the blues and turtles have in common?

According to Kelley Wallace from Think Turtle Initiative, it is the time of year in Ontario when freshwater turtle species nests are hatching. The hatchlings are vulnerable to predators and road mortality and “need all the help they can get to navigate their way to water safely.”

Brant Zwicker, host/executive producer of the syndicated blues radio program At The Crossroads (atcblues.ca), recently voiced a public service announcement for a 97.7 Moose FM radio hatchling awareness campaign.

According to Wallace,  his announcement has had a ‘significant impact, inspiring many people to take action and join the cause’.

As a tribute for using his voice and platform to help turtles, Wallace says that they named the first turtle hatchling out this season after Brant Zwicker.

“Everyday, turtle hatchlings show up, and many request to be named by Brant Zwicker and friends. And not just any name, these hatchlings insist on a bluesy name”

The post went on to say that a few bluesy names have already been given such as “Tugboat Charlie” and “Pogo Leroy” but more names are needed (last year over 1,000 hatchlings were helped by Think Turtle Initiative).

Everyone is invited to take part in the blues name-a-thon by emailing their Bluesy Hatchling Name to [email protected] from Friday, Sept. 6 until the close the following Monday.

The creator of the favorite name will win a Think Turtle t-shirt and an At The Crossroads t-shirt.
