‘Be alert’: Turtle nests are starting to hatch

During most of July and August you may not have see much turtle activity on or near roads.

However, according to Kelly Wallace from Think Turtle Initiative, that is about to change as turtle nests begin hatching from mid-August to October, with September being the busiest period.

MooseFM had a check in with Wallace to see how people can help.

“Please be especially alert while driving on roads and ATV trails. Turtle hatchlings are particularly vulnerable on roads… If you have passengers, enlist their assistance to help watch for hatchlings, particularly on sections adjacent to water bodies.” says Wallace.

When encountering a turtle hatchling on the road, Wallace says (if it is safe to stop) observe its direction, usually toward water. Gently pick it up and take it to the nearest body of water. These actions can make a significant difference in turtle conservation efforts.

Once you reach the water, Wallace says to “find a shallow spot with plenty of vegetation or leafy debris to protect the hatchling. Place it at the water’s edge, and let the hatchling enter the water at its own pace. Hatchlings will spend most of their early years hiding.”

Efforts to help hatchlings avoid roads, predators, and obstacles can be the deciding factor in their survival.

Wallace also notes that turtles often hatch in groups. If you find one hatchling, look around for more. Spreading multiple hatchlings around the water is essential to aid them in survival. This strategy reduces the risk of predators targeting a single area, thereby increasing the hatchlings’ overall survival chances.

With fall-like temperatures moving in, more adult and juvenile turtles will most likely be out and about, so people should be extra mindful on roads and trails.
