Local teen kicks off lawn game start-up, with support from summer grant program

Isa Obrein from Barry’s Bay has had a busy summer.

The 15 year old recently started up his own business Sports Hub, with the help of the The Summer Company Program. Funded by the provincial government, the program aims to empower students, through mentorship and grants, to turn their business ideas into reality.

MooseFM caught up with Obrein earlier this week to learn more about his summer start-up.

“I rent out lawn games to cottagers in Barry’s Bay and for birthday parties. I have giant Jenga, inflatable body bumpers, giant sized kick darts, giant checkers. I have axe throwing, I have LED frisbees that light up to 16 million colours, which I find is very cool.”

Obrein, who is homeschooled, will be starting the International Learning Center program for Grade 9 in the fall. He spoke about why Sports Hub has been a rewarding experience so far.

“I like helping my customers and making them happy and seeing their kids happy. I like seeing them refer my business to other people. I also like being my own boss, having my own timings, rules and regulations.”

Obrein says he first learned of the Summer Grant Program for youth when his mom Fatima saw it while browsing online.

“We’re super proud of him” said Fatima. “It was an amazing experience. He had lots of interviews with different people and it was really really exciting to see him, you know, flourish and grow, coming up with the idea.”

Obrein says the season may be winding down soon but he’s eager to see Sports Hub continue beyond the summer:

“I really want to expand the business,” said Obrein, “And grow into more of an all-seasons [business]. So, for example, in winter I want to [see] ice fishing and, if it gets really big, snowmobiles and in the fall hunting equipment.”
