After the Bancroft council voted to increase the arena user fee to $200 (from the previous years $100) McGibbon, who voted against the increase, decided to do something to help offset the cost.
“It’s extremely difficult for a lot of families to play hockey and skate and all of that. So I wanted to do what I could to help offset it.”
McGibbon said she was inspired by Bancroft District Minor Hockey Association’s fundraising efforts. The organization, upon hearing of the user fee increase, recently announced that instead of making the families pay for the fee, they would fundraise to cover the user fees for its players.
“Bancroft Minor Hockey started showing some fundraising initiatives, and I thought, well, if they’re going to step up and do that, then I want to do what I can to also help.”
McGibbon explained that on Saturday July 27, when families come to the shop and give a $10 donation, they get a free “special” cupcake.
“Everything goes straight to Bancroft Minor Hockey, so they will have their players and parents outside collecting the donations. They get a ticket, bring it into me, and they get a free cupcake.”
McGibbon estimates her cost for the day will be about $750 and she aims to have 200 cupcakes available. She says the full $2000 made will be donated to Bancroft and District Minor Hockey.
“Puck” cup day will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday July 27.
