Madawaska Valley to lower fire rating to Yellow

Madawaska Valley is lowering its Fire Rating to Yellow, meaning night-time burning will be allowed with a permit.

The new rating comes into effect on Thursday, Sept. 14.

It’s an easing of restrictions, as Madawaska Valley has had a Level 1 fire ban in place, which meant fire permits have been suspended and only campfires have been allowed.

Fire chief Corwin Quade says any fire that covers about two square feet requires a permit. If it’s a campfire, it’s fine, so long as it’s happening two hours after sunset or two hours before sunrise.

He adds a person responsible for a fire will face a fine if it gets out of control.  Also, the fine for burning without a proper permit is $615.

Permits are available at the Madawaska Valley municipal office during business hours, or at the MacEwen gas station in Barry’s Bay and at CO Country Market in Combermere. They cost $10 and are good for five days.
