Madawaska Valley’s head librarian ready for the next chapter in life

Barry’s Bay’s beloved head librarian is ready to enter the next chapter of her life.

Karen Filipkowski is retiring from her role as CEO of the Madawaska Valley Public Library. Her last day is Friday, Nov. 25.

Filipkowski led the library for about a decade and was involved in numerous projects to expand the library’s services, outside its own walls. She built partnerships with schools and day cares.

But she says she was just one person in a team effort.

“Nothing happens in a vacuum and it doesn’t happen without great staff, a very supportive library board and municipal support and community support,” she says. “That’s the reason we have the library we have now. It was built by the community.”

Filipkowski says the library is in good hands, as Natalie Barrington has been hired to replace her.

“I think a lot of programs will continue. The successful ones will carry on. And Natalie will be creative in her own way, she’ll bring her own stamp to the library.”

Filipkowski says she’s looking forward to spending more time with her family, but will stay involved with the library and work as volunteer.

The Township is encouraging people to drop by the library on Friday, Nov. 25 between 10 a.m. and 12 noon or 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to wish Filipkowski well.
