The Station Keepers are once again celebrating the history of the Valley.
They, along with the Opeongo Readers Theater will present a brand new production titled Ribbons of Steel. The play will happen Thursday August 1st at 7 PM. The story will detail an accident that took place in the summer of 1894 during the construction of the Ottawa-Arnprior-Parry Sound Railway. The story was told by local Tom Murray who lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and helped construct the railway. Barry Conway of the Station Keepers says it’s important for plays like this to take place in the Madawaska Valley. He says the story serves as a reminder that the railway was not easy to construct, and says many people do not own the story. There will also be collections of newspaper clippings detailing the work on the railway and the accident at Haggarty pass.
Also on the 3rd an afternoon concert will be put on featuring the Stoppa Lake Melodiers. The folk band traditional fiddle player that knows local fiddle tunes. Roots musicians, traditional music that Conway describes as “Toe tapping, upbeat” fiddle music. That concert begins at 2PM.
