One team is used to stopping pucks and the other is used to stopping criminals and next month, they will try to stop each other.
That’s because the Scotiabank NHL Alumni Benefit Tour is set to stop in Pembroke on March 21st. Former NHL stars will be taking to the ice to face off against your local Law Enforcement All-Stars. The tour is celebrating the Special Olympics’ 50th Anniversary.
Constable Shawn Peever of the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP says the tour’s been coming to Pembroke for a couple years now and adds that it’s a great way to raise money for the Special Olympics. He says many athletes will be volunteering during the event and says it’s a great way to give back to our community.
Peever, who’s played many times in the benefit game, says it also features a skills competition that will certainly keep hockey fans entertained. He says that he’s played against the likes of Marcel Dionne and Rick Vaive (to name a few) in the past. When he was asked to remember a special moment from one of the games he’s played in, Peever says he remembers facing off against ex-Boston Bruins tough guy, Stan Jonathan. Peever says “I’m at the face-off circle and Stan Jonathan looks at me and says “Are you the tough guy?”” to which Peever gently replied “No Mr. Jonathan…”.
Past NHL legends who have played on the tour include Wayne Gretzky, Curtis Joseph and Theo Fleury to name a few.
The game is on Thursday March 21st at the Pembroke Memorial Centre. Doors open at 6:00 PM and puck drop is at 7:00 PM. For more information and to purchase tickets, click here.
