A fire broke out at the new Wilno Rink, five days before its grand opening.
Fire Chief of Madawaska Valley Township Fire Department, Corwin Quade, says the call came in on Tuesday night around 7:00.
He says the fire broke out in the rink’s utility room and was contained by two fire fighters who live nearby. He says they used fire extinguishers to fight the fire before the other fire fighters arrived on scene.
Quade applauds the new Wilno Rink, which isn’t open yet, for being up-to-date in regards to fire alarms and other fire safety equipment. If it wasn’t for those and the neighbour who heard the fire alarms, it could have been a different story he says.
The fire department initially thought it was a structure fire and Quade says “we showed up with 19 fire fighters, two pumper trucks, two tanker trucks and one rescue truck”. He continues by saying that at the end of it all, minimal damage was caused and no one was hurt.
Quade says the cause of the fire is still unknown and adds that the rink’s grand opening is good to go this Saturday.
