The Provincial Government announced that they will be reducing tuition fees for College and University students.
The MPP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, John Yakabuski, says that Ontario’s tuition fees are the highest in the Country and that the Provincial Government wanted to help students afford the fees that had doubled in that last few years. He says that students have gotten what they have asked for.
The Barry’s Bay native says that reducing tuition fees by 10% has a major impact on students and has no doubt that the news is well received by scholars.
As for abolishing free tuition for low income households, Yakabuski says that the program was only available to 30% of students. He says that the program was part of a political game the previous Government had put in place which didn’t have the desired outcome. Yakabuski adds that with the previous Government, certain families making $175 000 a year per house hold were receiving grants which he says “doesn’t make sense”. He says that abolishing the program and lowering tuition fees for everyone makes it more fair and equitable for every student.
