Wade Wallace says “We want to negotiate but we don’t want to hurt customers”.
The President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers in Pembroke local 588 says the federal government’s legislation to get postal workers back on the job is a quick fix that won’t last.
He says that because Christmas is around the corner, the government got pressured to step in by major online stores like Amazon and eBay as well as Wal-Mart. He says he thinks it’s a 3 month cooling off period that will not resolve issues. He adds that there are still many pay equity and safety issues that need to be addressed but giving customers the service they deserve is still the priority.
Wallace says he doesn’t like to see disruptions in the service and thought the rotating strike was the perfect balance in order to get their point across while still maintaining a good flow of deliveries for their customers. For now, he wants customers to enjoy the holidays and believes that the legislation will bring a new arbitrator or mediator in the future.
