Extension Cord Safety

The Madawaska Valley Township Fire Department want you to watch out when using extension cords this holiday season.

Fire Chief Corwin Quade says extension cords shouldn’t be used for more than 12 hours a day. He says they can heat up and short circuit your wall which could then start a fire. He also suggests to make sure you’re aware of which ones you buy. He says it’s important to make sure your extension cords are CSA or ULC approved. He states that the cheap ones don’t always meet standards, they could heat up and start a fire on your floor.

As for using indoor extension cords in the outdoors, don’t do it. He says the wire could crack and build condensation which could cause a short circuit. Quade also told us that you should plug your Christmas tree lights in a power bar instead of a multiple wall mount outlet.
