The impact of the first ever Reunion Cup goes much deeper than winning a championship.
The tournament, which was taking the place of the Opeongo Heritage Cup for 2018, saw teams play all weekend at the Paul J. Yakabuski Community Centre with all proceeds going towards local minor hockey.
President of Barry’s Bay and Area Minor Hockey Billy Green says while they aren’t done tallying up how much was raised over the weekend, it’s expected to be a big amount.
After news came about the absence of the Opeongo Heritage Cup, Green along with others decided to arrange the Reunion Cup in its place to keep the tradition going. He says he thinks the tournament went well from the ice to the stands.
Every year the tournament sees players in multiple divisions play for their heritage, whether it be Irish, Kashubian, Algonquin or German.
