Gallant concerned about Canada’s deficit after release of federal budget

Cheryl Gallant is concerned about where Canada’s deficit stands.

The 2018 federal budget was released on Tuesday, and includes an over $18-billion deficit, with no plans to balance the books for the next five years. Renfrew Today reports that the MP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke says it will now take a quarter-century to balance the deficit, assuming the economy doesn’t change. She says Canada is now half-a-trillion dollars in debt.

Gallant is also concerned that the budget doesn’t include any funding for infrastructure projects.

The budget does have funding carved out to promote pay equality in federal workplaces, to give new fathers five weeks off work, and to help fight the country’s growing opioid crisis. There will be no tax hikes or cuts this year.
