Hastings Highlands Council to receive report on OMB hearing costs

Hastings Highlands Council will receive a report on how much a recent OMB hearing cost.

In November, the municipality went through an Ontario Municipal Board hearing because of changes to the way residents vote. Some residents appealed council’s decision to switch to municipality-wide elections, and do away with the three ward system. Ultimately, the OMB decided the municipality would be allowed to uphold its decision.

A motion was put forward by Councillor Tracy Hagar yesterday asking for a breakdown of how much the municipality spent on the hearing. Hagar says she also wants to know how many staff hours were put into preparing for it.

During yesterday’s council meeting, CAO Pat Pilgrim says she spent a lot of time on the hearing, but would not venture a guess on just how much.

Councillor Hald Robinson seconded the motion. Robinson says he believes it’s important for Hastings Highlands residents to know where part of their taxes end up.

The report is expected to come forward to Hastings Highlands Council during its meeting on February 21st.
